The Diocese of Victoria is proud to have two chapters of the Serra Club to help promote vocations. Since it was founded in 1935, in Seattle, Wash., and named after Blessed Junipero Serra, Serra International has chartered over 1,000 Serra Clubs in 46 countries on six continents.
Serra's objectives and purposes:
I know that you were all thrilled as I was to hear that Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra in September during his apostolic visit to the United States. With that news, I began organizing a pilgrimage to the missions of California, which I believe will become the great pilgrimage camino of North America. I have put together a trip for October and am including below links to the brochure with itinerary and details. I want to offer the members of the Serra Club, along with spouses, family, and friends, an early opportunity to look this over and consider joining the pilgrimage.
As you know, Serra is a great hero of the Catholic faith in the United States and is a great model for church vocations and missionary discipleship. This pilgrimage will be an opportunity to experience his evangelical zeal and his sacrificial love for Jesus Christ. We will learn about Native American spirituality, the Franciscan tradition, and the missions of Junipero Serra. When Pope Francis declares Blessed Serra a saint in September, our October pilgrimage will be among the first to travel to the tomb, relics, and missions of this newly canonized saint.
In addition, we will share the beautiful coast of California, taste some Sonoma wine, and tour San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and the wonderful places in between. In addition to exploring the most important of the missions, we will see beautiful modern cathedrals: St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, and Christ Cathedral (formerly Crystal Cathedral) in Orange County, and celebrate Mass each day.
Please take a look at these links, for information and itinerary for this unique, customized pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Saint Junipero Serra.
