Scripture is foundational to the Catholic faith. If you think about it, Bible stories are all around us. There are Good Samaritan laws. Parents often welcome home the Prodigal Son. And we hear Scripture readings in church.
Today, more than ever, we have the opportunity to discover the jewel that the Scriptures provide by learning the Catholic approach to reading the Bible. Beginning Aug. 30, adult Catholics in the Diocese of Victoria will have the opportunity to delve into the “Good Book” by participating in the six-week course: “Introduction to the Bible and Pentateuch.” This course is for everyone who is curious about the message that God is providing through the stories in the Bible.
The Bible, for some, can be confusing. However, the proper approach to understanding the basic principles of how the passages of the Bible were gathered over time -- who wrote the stories, in what literary form and in what language, for example -- provides the reader a broader view of the Scriptures, which helps in discovering the deeper message. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website states, “Today's Catholic is called to take an intelligent, spiritual approach to the bible.”
Father Stephen Vacek, pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City will be the instructor for the six-week course, which will be offered every Tuesday morning from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Participants can gather at the Chancery in Victoria or at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Yorktown to listen and learn as a community. There is also an option to join the classes synchronously (online from your home), or even watch and listen to the recorded sessions asynchronously (through a password-protected site).
